How to check a KPI

Can you count it from data you already have? Does the employee affect it? Do they understand the formula? If any answer is “no”, the KPI will be argued about at every payout.

How many KPIs to give

3–5. With more, each has a small weight and the employee does not see what matters most.

Questions

How is a KPI different from an OKR?

A KPI measures ongoing work and is usually tied to a bonus. An OKR is an ambitious goal for a quarter that does not have to be hit 100%. OKR examples are on a separate page.

How do I tie a bonus to KPIs?

Set a target bonus, a threshold and a cap: for example, below 80% achievement — no bonus, above 150% — no more than the cap. That is how the calculator on this page counts.
